SMO 254

SMO 254, also known as 6Mo or UNS S31254, is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel that offers exceptional corrosion resistance, particularly in aggressive and chloride-rich environments. Here’s some information about SMO 254:

Composition:

  • SMO 254 contains a high percentage of the following elements:
    • Chromium (Cr): Approximately 20.0 – 22.0%
    • Nickel (Ni): Approximately 17.5 – 18.5%
    • Molybdenum (Mo): Approximately 6.0 – 6.5%
    • Nitrogen (N): Approximately 0.18 – 0.22%
    • Copper (Cu): Approximately 0.5 – 1.0%
    • Iron (Fe): Makes up the balance of the alloy
  • It also contains small amounts of other elements like manganese, silicon, and carbon.

Key Features:

  • Excellent Corrosion Resistance: SMO 254 is highly resistant to corrosion in various aggressive environments, including seawater, acids, and chlorides.
  • High Strength: It has good mechanical properties, including high tensile and yield strength.
  • Resistance to Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: This alloy is known for its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing solutions.
  • High Temperature Resistance: SMO 254 maintains its corrosion resistance even at elevated temperatures.

Applications: SMO 254 is commonly used in industries and applications that require superior corrosion resistance, such as:

  • Chemical Processing: Equipment for handling aggressive chemicals.
  • Oil and Gas: Offshore and onshore facilities, subsea pipelines.
